MAN 4720 - Industry Analysis Assignment: SIC or NAICS

This video explains the industry classification system called NAICS and how to determine the NAICS code for an industry.

• Be aware that databases will sometimes indicate a primary code to identify the company's main area of business and sometimes use additional codes to indicate other areas of activity, so be aware that a company can have more than one SIC or NAICS code, depending on the database. It is important to understand that using SIC/NAICS codes will not necessarily produce an exhaustive, comprehensive list of an industry's players. 
• Try "keyword search" if there is no result showing up when searching by SIC/NAICS codes.

NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) -- "developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America."

Identifying the NAICS for an Industry -- One of the easiest ways to identify the NAICS or SIC for an industry is to look up a company in that industry using one of the business databases. The descriptive information about the company almost always includes a listing of the industry or industries in which the company is engaged.
