Established in 1965, the Children's Theatre Company (CTC) of Minneapolis earned its reputation as the flagship theater for young people in this country by staging plays that both entertained and challenged children and their families. Around the age of twelve, however, young people tended to stop coming to CTC, perceiving that they had outgrown what the theater could offer them. In an effort to reach out to and engage these young people, the CTC began to commission and produce plays aimed at a twelve- to eighteen-year-old audience, focusing on the complexities, idiosyncrasies, and epic dilemmas in the lives of young people. Fierce and True collects four of these critically acclaimed plays: Anon(ymous) by Naomi Iizuka, The Lost Boys of Sudan by Lonnie Carter, Five Fingers of Funk by Will Power, and Prom by Whit MacLaughlin and New Paradise Laboratories."

"Each entry includes appropriate grade levels, information about reviews, authors' names, title, cast analysis, playing time, description of settings, number of acts, plot summary, evaluation of the play, royalty information, information on source documents, the main themes, indications regarding the type of play, and acknowledgement of the originals upon which some plays were based."

A selective author, title, and subject index to English-language plays and translations -- classical through contemporary -- published separately or in collections. Entries usually include a brief plot summary and production specifications, and are keyed to a list of collections in the back of each volume. The Cast Analysis section "is designed to locate plays by type and number of players or readers. It is divided into these six sections: (1) all male cast (2) all female cast (3) mixed cast (4) puppet plays (5) unidentified cast (6) variable cast. Unidentified cast is used for non-human characters. Variable cast is used when roles can be acted by either male or female characters, or when an actor can take several parts.... Under each type of cast the arrangement is by total number of characters in ascending order.... The symbol "c" denotes a play intended for children through grade six. A "y" indicates material for grades seven through twelve approximately."

An index of over 500 plays for middle and high school students as well as a plot summary and information for each play including author, style, cast size, and leasing agent.
