a brief history of department and the Information Literacy Modules project

What is a Learning Object?

Learning Objects are scalable, reusable educational materials that are brief in scope and topic specific. The Information Literacy Modules (learning objects) are delivered in the Obojobo system. Each module includes a learning objective, content, practice self-checks, and assessment questions.

What is Obojobo?

Obojobo was designed by developers at the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL). It is a multidimensional interface that allows for the development and hosting of learning objects. The system is "capable of building, containing and utilizing instructional components. These components, basic in structure and rich in media capabilities, are designed to include innovative help features and assistive guidelines to better support designers and authors throughout the development process" ("About", 2010).  One way the tool facilitates learning is through the assessment capabilities that were included.  Development begin in 2005 with the assistance and feedback of students, instructional designers, and faculty throughout Florida, and it was officially launched in June, 2008.

Obojobo is an ever-changing system which includes many features which are frequently updated and enhanced.  It was designed to be a complete platform, and includes an Editor to create learning objects, a Repository to manage and distribute them, and a Viewer for student learning.  It was also developed to be easy to use.  Creation of learning objects has been streamlined to a step-by-step process, yet is easily integrated into UCF's online courses.  Student assessment scores may be easily downloaded by faculty into a grade book.  Students should also find Obojobo easy to use, with four categories: Learning Objective, Content, Practice, and Assessment.

The Libraries' Student Learning & Engagement department were the initial users of Obojobo, and the Information Literacy Modules served as the beta test for Obojobo's functionality.  Student usability tests were conducted to help system administrators and ILO staff improve both the modules and Obojobo's features, and many new features have been added since the initial launch.

Version History

The Obojobo Repository includes four main components: Public Library, Published Instances, My Objects, and Media Assets.

  • The Public Library contains the learning objects that are available for distribution. From the Public Library, faculty previewed available learning objects or customized learning objects for a specific course. 
  • Published Instances is the way in which faculty can distribute a learning object to their students and collect assessment scores.
  • My Objects includes the learning objects that a user has created, customized, or shared, including drafts of new learning objects. From here, users can create, edit, preview, or share their work. 
  • Many learning objects contain some form of media, and the Media Assets tab allows users to upload or edit media to a learning object.

The Obojobo system is regularly updated to reflect new and enhanced features. The first update occurred in June, 2008, and with each successive update, new features have been added. Additional information about versions is available on the Obojobo website.

    • Software supports Flash video files and YouTube videos
  • Version 1.3
    • Instuctors can specify how Obojobo calculates the final scores if student take an assessment multiple times
    • Multiple Choice and Short Answers questions now have media capability
    • Question bank allows users to create one question with multiple alternate forms.
  • Version 1.3.1
    • Tutorial videos now available for help
  • Version 1.7
    • Integration with Webcourses@UCF Grade book allows faculty to easily send student scores to Webcourses.
    • Student will now receive an email notifying them of their assessment score and attempt history
  • Version 1.8
    • Media from Flickr may now be added to the Repository
  • Version 2.0
    • The viewer is now in HTML5, meaning better support for accessibility and mobile browsers
