Common Search Strategies It's often best to start your search using keyword terms, find an article that is relevant to your topic (or topic concepts), and then rerun searches by refining search terms.  See the tips below for common search strategies.

  • Identify relevant keywords for your topic -- topic concepts
  • In some cases, you may want to search using both subject & keyword terms
  • Use AND to combine and connect topic concepts (narrows search)
  • Use OR to include synonyms or related terms (expands search) (online learning OR distance education)
  • Use an asterisk to search for different word endings (instruct* -- finds instructor, instructional)
  • Use quotes to capture phrases commonly used to describe a topic --topic concepts ("distance education")
  • Use database filters to refine and focus searches
  • Keep track of sources and save citations to cite in your paper
