Ignitable Liquids Database

The Ignitable Liquids Database and Reference Collection

The Ignitable Liquids Database and Reference Collection were developed by the Technical and Scientific Working Group for Fire and Explosions (T/SWGFEX) Ignitable Liquids Reference Collection Committee (ILRCC) in conjunction with the National Center for Forensic Science (NCFS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF). The program was begun based on work by James Cerven (retired) of the Illinois State Police and greatly contributed by Reta Newman, Director of the Pinellas County (FL) Crime Laboratory.

NCFS - UCF maintains the collection and administers the database as well as analyzes new ignitable liquids and subsequently adds the data into the database on a regular basis. Before being added, the data is reviewed and classified by the ILRCC following the recommendations in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E-1618 test method. While the committee always seeks to determine a single classification for the ignitable liquids, some ignitable liquids will be mixtures with similar concentrations of multiple ignitable liquid classifications and will be placed in the “Miscellaneous” group. Others are composed primarily of a single ignitable liquid classification but show minor quantities of additional compounds or ignitable liquid classifications. Depending on the type and quantity of the additional components, these may be classified under the classification of the majority composition with a notation in the “Supplemental Information” section within the “Sample detail and download” section. The ILRCC has completed a “User’s Guide” to assist database users in understanding the classification decisions and deliberations of the committee (see User Guide).

The database contains hundreds of ignitable liquid records and is being augmented with many of those same ignitable liquids in various stages of deterioration by weathering or degradation by microbial action over time. The microbial degradation studies have been greatly assisted by research conducted at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) under the direction of John Goodpaster, PhD and Dee Turner, PhD. online casino canada

The ILRCC has also worked with NCFS-UCF, specifically Michael Sigman, PhD and Mary Williams, MS, to develop and post a substrate database composed of various common materials both unburned and burned under controlled conditions. The controlled burn conditions in the database represent only one of the potential results from the burning of the material as variations will exist depending on changes to the geometry of the material, the application of heat, available oxygen, and the presence of other materials that may contribute.

Funding for the Ignitable Liquids Reference Collection and Database has been provided by the University of Central Florida and through grants awarded by the National Institute of Justice.
