What is the Learning Commons Service Model in North America?

Part Three

  • LCs are spacious, open, & comfortable collaborative learning spaces within a high tech, wireless environment. Food, beverages and talking is permitted.
  • Physical collections have been reduced & reclaimed space is used to create collaborative environments
  • Furnishings & equipment include: pods of high-end computer workstations with flat screen monitors; clusters of high-backed chairs (on wheels) &  whiteboards (on wheels) surrounding work tables; comfortable soft seating areas for socializing
  • LC components include: integrated or adjacent service desks staffed by librarians and IT experts; collaborative learning spaces;  electronic classrooms; multimedia studios; presentation practice rooms; visualization labs; gaming labs; satellite services for writing, tutoring, advising, career counseling; café and lounge areas; spaces for meetings and cultural events.
