What is the Learning Commons Service Model in North America?

Presentation by Barbara Tierney for the Japan Association of National University Libraries (JANUL) Symposium, University of Tokyo, January 29, 2016

Part Four

  • Rochester (New York) University example:
Foster, N. F., & Gibbons, S.  Studying students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester.(Chicago: Assoc. of College and Research Libraries, 2007).
  • Univ. of North Carolina, Charlotte (UNCC) example:
In 2009, the new UNCC Library Director (from Rochester Univ.) hired an anthropologist to study how students do their work; established a “Personal Librarian” service model whereby every college, every academic department, every course, every student, every faculty member had a designated “Personal Librarian”; merged several service desks into one, creating a blended service desk model.
  • Univ. of Central Florida (UCF) example:
In 2010, a “Knowledge Commons” was created within the UCF main campus library.
In 2013, the new Head of Research Services (from UNCC) created a Subject Librarian service model.  This model adheres to the  “Framework for the Engaged Librarian model…." https://library.osu.edu/staff/administration-reports/Engaged_Librarian_Framework_Dec2011.pdf
