Understanding the Assignment

This is an important but often overlooked aspect of research. Before you start searching for sources, make sure you understand the parameters of the assignment first. For example:

  • Understand the key terms and instructions for your assignment.
  • Ask your instructor for clarification and advice if anything is unclear.
  • Determine what type(s) of research you will be conducting. Some examples include critical, interpretive, historical, creative, and multidisciplinary.
  • Familiarize yourself with requirements, prompts, and guidelines such as page length, citation style, number and type of sources required, and other formatting requirements.
  • Think about what types of sources you will need and where you're likely to find them. For example, you can access books, peer reviewed articles in academic journals, primary sources, and other types of media.

For Example:

For this assignment, you have to:

  • Identify: Their area of conceptual interest -The material execution of their work -Do they work in print? Primarily? Or as a way to diversify their market?
  • Then touch on: The ideas you are interested in exploring -How you physically plan to execute the work -How you plan on presenting the work: a portfolio of a suite of prints, a polyptych, an installation.

We'll talk more about how to select and navigate the many databases available at UCF to help answer these questions during the library session.

Conducting Preliminary Research

  • Before you begin searching databases, think about keywords, synonyms, and related concepts
  • Also think about related disciplines and fields of study. For example, psychology, sociology, literature, etc. What can concepts from related fields add to your research?
  • Consider the Depth and breadth of your research:
    • How many resources will you need?
    • What kinds of resources will you need to complete the assignment?
    • How thorough do you have to be?
  • Do you need to consider historical and geographic context, places, and events?
  • Who are the interested groups authors, publishers, positions?
    • Who writes and publishes about the topic and why?

Sample Search Strategy

I’ve selected Amaury Pacheco, a Cuban protest artist / dissident currently residing in Miami on a humanitarian VISA.

Pacheco is a multi-media artist who focuses on the hunger crisis and food insecurities in Cuba.

(From the series "Absolute Gastronomy")

My preliminary research included reading online interviews and reviewing The Human Rights Foundation’s Arte en Resistencia exhibition, which showcased Cuban artists who are not allowed to exhibit their work in Cuba.

Many of the artists involved have been jailed, placed under house arrest, or are in exile in the U.S. or Europe.

Because he does not have a large online presence, and it's unlikely there's any scholarship about him directly, I have to think about what kinds of resources I can use to contextualize his work.

Keywords
