Basic Databases

Use the following sources to find journal articles about a particular historical concept, movement, or historian. In some instances, books, essays in books, and current book reviews also may be found in these sources.
 
A comprehensive database of over 148,000 abstracts of literature related to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage. Managed by the Getty Museum and its Conservation Institute.
 
The definitive index of literature covering the history and culture of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. With indexing for 1,700 journals from as far back as 1910, this database is without question the most important bibliographic reference tool for students and scholars of U.S. and Canadian history.
 
Encompasses world history (excluding the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present, including military history, women's history, history of education, and more.
 
Covers scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism. This collection contains more than 828,000 records, with coverage dating as far back as 1965. There is full text for more than 490 publications, including periodicals, company and country reports, and books.
 
Full text of core research journals (including almost 1,500 titles in philosophy) from the year of their inception, many dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. JSTOR  typically does NOT cover the last three to five years of journals.
 
Provides online access to articles in over 200 journals in the arts and humanities, sciences, and mathematics, including a number in history. Usually, this database does not include the full run of a journal title.

Database that abstracts and indexes over 3,200 scholarly journals, and offers full text (often dating back to 1990) for over 1,000 journals.
 
A compilation of the Royal Anthropological Institute’s Anthropological Index and Harvard University's Anthropological Literature databases, Anthropology Plus is the world’s most comprehensive index covering the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and related interdisciplinary research. This database offers worldwide indexing of journals from the early 19th century to today, providing extensive indexing of journal articles, reports, and commentaries.
 
APA PsycINFO (1887+)
Useful for locating articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, and dissertations dealing with all aspects of psychology.
 
"Topics covered include art history & criticism, architecture & architectural history, archaeology, antiques, museum studies, graphic arts, industrial design, landscape architecture, interior design, folk art, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, decorative arts, costume design, television and video, motion pictures, advertising art, non-western art, textiles and much more" (publisher's description).
 
Indexes articles, books, and book reviews from more than 1,100 art and humanities journals. This database's primary use is to track citations to the works of a specific author through the "Cited Reference Search" feature.
 
Contains over 1.75 million bibliographic records on topics such as biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social and philosophical issues.
 
Offers a listing of journal articles published worldwide on architecture and design, archaeology, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation. Coverage is from the 1930s to the present, with selective coverage back to the 1860s.
 
Combines specialist topic resources from disciplines such as engineering, biotechnology, bacteriology, atmospheric science, ecology, and biology and features a diverse range of full-text sources including scientific journals, trade journals, new sources, conference proceedings, reports, monographs, books, and government publications.
 
Provides access to scholarly journals, magazines, and other reference sources covering environmental issues and policies. The database includes diverse perspectives from the scientific community, governmental policymakers, and corporate interests.
 
Index to collections of essays in books, with emphasis on the humanities.
 
Provides multidisciplinary and multilingual coverage of humanities and social sciences, including philosophy. This database is a continuation of the older print index Bulletin signalétique.
 
A database of citations to articles appearing in more than 400 English-language periodicals dealing with the humanities: folklore, history, language, literature, music, philosophy, religion, and classical studies.
 
PAIS Index (1915+)
Contains references to more than 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more.
 
Major source for abstracts of sociological literature.
