Where to Find the Missing Content from Drama Criticism

Literature Criticism Online provides online access to approximately 85% of the entries from the print publication.

Summary of the Analysis

Dates of Missing Items: It appears that none of the text entries prior to 1995 are missing. Approximately 15% of the text entries between 1995 and 2010 are missing. Gale has indicated that their policy has changed and that no entries will be missing from future volumes, but that there are some pending volumes to be published in 2010 which were commissioned prior to the change in policy and might have some entries missing in the online version.

Number of Missing Items through 2005:

  • CLC - 1763 missing entries
  • CLR - 1219 missing entries
  • CMLC - 503 missing entries
  • DC - 250 missing entries
  • LC - 827 missing entries
  • NCLC - 907 missing entries
  • PC - 463 missing entries
  • SC - 868 missing entries
  • SSC - 579 missing entries
  • TCLC - 1053 missing entries
  • TOTAL - 8432 missing entries

Detailed Examination of Drama Criticism: The online entries for volumes 1-33 of Drama Criticism were examined to determine which entries were missing.

  • None of the entries for volumes 1-5 appear to be missing.
  • Volume 6 has 8 topics with 97 entries. Only 1 entry is missing.
  • Volumes 7-33 have 125 topics with 1,877 entries. Of those 125 topics, 103 (82.4%) are missing 1 or more entries. Of the 1,877 entries, 284 (15.1%) are missing.
  • Volumes 1-33 have 187 topics with 2,683 entries. Of those 187 topics, 104 (55.6%) are missing 1 or more entries. Of the 2,683 entries, 285 (10.6%) are missing.
  • Volume 11 has the highest percentage of missing entries (27 of 97 entries, 27.8%).
  • Volume 8 has the highest number of missing entries (30 of 131 entries, 22.9%).
  • Of volumes 7-33:
    • 8 volumes are missing more than 20% of their entries
    • 12 volumes are missing between 10% and 20% of their entries
    • 7 volumes are missing less than 10% of their entries
  • Of the 104 topics with missing entries, 43 are missing 20% or more of their entries. The highest percentage of missing entries for a topic is 5 of 9 (55.6%) for "Spalding Gray" in volume 7. The highest number of missing entries for a topic is 9 of 21 (42.9%) for "Marsha Norman" in volume 8.
  • The missing entries are spread across the run of the series:
    • volumes 1-5 - 0% missing
    • volumes 6-10 - 16.5% missing
    • volumes 11-15 - 13.3% missing
    • volumes 16-20 - 14.6% missing
    • volumes 21-25 - 19.3% missing
    • volumes 26-30 - 10.4% missing
    • volumes 31-33 - 10.2% missing

Missing Illustrations: It appears that a very small percentage of illustrations within entries are missing from throughout the runs of the various sets, but this analysis does not examine that issue.

Update (April 2015): In Drama Criticism, the counts for entries not available in the online version are as follows:

  • 2006, volumes 26-27, 15 entries missing
  • 2007, no volumes published
  • 2008, volumes 28-31, 27 entries missing
  • 2009, volumes 32-35, 13 entries missing
  • 2010, volumes 36-40, 5 entries missing
  • 2011, volumes 41-43, 4 entries missing
  • 2012, volumes 44-47, 10 entries missing -- 9 missing from volume 44 and 1 missing from volume 45
  • 2013, volume 48, none missing
  • 2014, volumes 49-51, none missing
  • 2015, volume 52, none missing

All 75 of the entries previously identified as missing for volumes 6 through 10 are still not available online, so the entries for volumes 11 through 33 were not re-evaluated for missing status.
