Guide Introduction

This library guide connects students, staff, and faculty to information and resources related to artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI tools. The guide is designed as a starting point instead of a comprehensive resource. Please reach out to your librarian to dig deeper into these topics as they relate to research.

AI Glossary

  • artificial intelligence (AI) - the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.
  • bias in AI - also referred to as machine learning bias or algorithm bias, refers to AI systems that produce biased results that reflect and perpetuate human biases within a society, including historical and current social inequality. Bias can be found in the initial training data, the algorithm, or the predictions the algorithm produces. Definition from IBM.
  • deep learning - a type of machine learning based on artificial neural networks in which multiple layers of processing are used to extract progressively higher level features from data.
  • generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) - artificial intelligence that is designed to process prompts from users and respond with text, images, audio, or other output that is modeled on a training data set. Definition from Dictionary.com.
  • large language model (LLM) - ​a computer program that uses very large collections of language data in order to understand and produce text in a way that is similar to the way humans do. Chatbots are built using large language models. Definition from Oxford Learner's Dictionaries. 
  • machine learning (ML) - the use and development of computer systems that are able to learn and adapt without following explicit instructions, by using algorithms and statistical models to analyze and draw inferences from patterns in data.
  • natural language processing (NLP) - the branch of computer science—and more specifically, the branch of artificial intelligence or AI—concerned with giving computers the ability to understand text and spoken words in much the same way human beings can. Definition from IBM.
  • neural network - a computer system modeled on the human brain and nervous system.
