Practice Exercises 1

From the UCF Library homepage http://library.ucf.edu, click on Books/Catalog and go to the Advanced Search screen. 

 

Type civic engagement in the first search box.  Type youth in the second search box.  Keep both search type at anywhere.

 

Click Search.

 

On the left hand side of the results screen, find Subject: Topic and click on Political Participation.

 

Find the title, Engaging young people in civic life, with a publication date of 2009.  To open the record, click on the title.

 

1. Who are the editors?  __________________________________________________     

 

2. What is the location and call number? _____________________________________

 

3. What are the two subject headings?  _______________________________________

 

 

Click Results List on the right hand side to get back to the results.

 

There are two quick ways to locate an electronic book, the Library Catalog or an ebook database. We are using the Library Catalog for this next search.

 

We are now back at the original search.   Scroll down until you find Narrow Results by: Subject: Genre.

 

Click Electronic Books.

 

Find the title, A New Engagement?: Political Participation, Civic Life and the Changing American Citizen,  with the  E-book symbol and click on Click here for FULL TEXT from Net Library.     

 

If you are off-campus, you will be directed to an EZProxy login screen.  Login with your 14-digit library ID number and password.

 

Click on View this eBook.

 

Look at the Table of Contents (left column).

 

Click on the + (plus) sign in front of book’s title or chapters to expand the sections.

 

 

 4. What is the title of Chapter 3?  ______________________________________

 


Look at the bottom of the left column, and type civic engagement in the Search this eContent box.

Click on the ‘Search’ button

 

You receive a list of pages that contain the term civic engagement.  Choose Page 200 and click on View This Page.

 

 

Important: Click on Close Item (near top of left column) when you are finished so the ebook will be available for the next person.
