Established: 1999
The history of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) begins with the establishment in 1910 of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station in Bruceton, PA, and in 1946 of the Synthetic Gas Branch Experiment Station in Morgantown, WV. There were various name changes and reorganizations through the years and in 1996 the Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC) was launched through the unification of the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC). In 1999 the Secretary of Energy designated FETC as the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
