  • Ad started off with a strong DEI statement (all staff responsible for advancing DEI)
  • Director, Library DEI
  • DEI will be that person’s only responsibility
  • Person is involved in hiring process for new library employees
  • Five years of experience
  • Prior work in DEI required

Clemson

  • Residency Program
  • Does DEI work with a residency program…..first job
  • Sounds like an easy way to check a box

NC State

  • Director of DEI Sounds like a combination HR / Librarian Position
  • Like requirement to DEI initiatives
  • Included salary $80,000 to $90,000 which tells me they want an experience person unlike residency programs

Northwestern

  • Director’s position
  • Librarian / HR
  • Experience with leadership of multi-dimensional diversity and equity initiatives
  • Non-tenure eligible

Ohio State

  • Assistant Dean
  • Strong antiracist statement at beginning of job description
  • $125,000 to $155,000
  • Works with HR rather than being HR
  • Not sure if this is a positive or a negative…Certified Diversity Professional (CDP); Certified Diversity Executive (CDE); Cornell Certified Diversity Professional (CCDP) or other related certification

Susquehanna University

  • Diversity Resident
  • DEI not mentioned until third requirement
  • Next to last requirement list experience working with diverse racial and ethnic populations required
  • Sounds like they really business librarian for instruction and instructional services

UNC Wilmington

  • Preferred qualifications do not include DEI
  • Sounds more like more work for an archivist to enhance UNCW’s special collections

Yale

  • New Director of DEI and Organizational Excellence
  • DEI in opening statement
  • DEI primary or only responsibility

Questions to ask DEI Librarians

  • Were you hired to do DEI work full-time?  Do you have DEI as part of your job assignment?  
  • Are you part of Human Resources?  Administration?  Were are you in the organizational chart of the library?
  • Do you chair a DEI taskforce at your library?  Tell us how that works and what assignments does the taskforce have? 
  • Do you have support staff?  
  • Were you hired as the DEI Librarian or did you transition into this position? 
  • What is your job description like?  How different is it from your job assignment? 
  • What are your responsibilities? 
  • How involved are you in presentations, training, etc. for your staff and librarians? 
  • Is this your first DEI position?

  • Are you involved in writing job descriptions or participate in the job interviewing process?

    Do your job applications reference DEI, or include DEI supplemental question(s)?

    Why did you accept the DEI position?

    How long have you held the DEI position?

    What is the racial makeup of your library faculty and staff members?

    Are you involved in DEI outreach project(s) or developed any outreach project(s) involving recruitment for your library?
