There are countless GIS mapping tools available online. Since they are not the primary focus of this guide, we have chosen to present a select few Open Source tools that do not require fees or subscriptions. Many of these resources were used to create the projects listed in the Place in the Digital Humanities section above. Also featured here is a Spatial Humanities workshop for those who want an introduction to how to get started in this area. This free workshop includes introductions to map literacy, narrative maps, working with spatial data, lesson plans, and links to other resources. You can also consider this workshop as a bridge from GIS to the next sections on visualizing the humanities and digital storytelling.
