This database is a joint effort of Columbia University libraries and Columbia University Press and is a source of information for theory and research in international affairs. There are working papers from research institutes, policy briefs from nongovernmental organizations, proceedings from conferences, selected articles from research journals and books, economic indicators, and country information. Not everything is available in full-text. Searching for information on this database is different from others you may have used.
On the left side of the screen is a listing of the sections in the database. Clicking on one of these will take you to that area. Each month, CIAO focuses on an international topic and provides selected content on the home page.
In the Search box at the top of the page, enter your search term or use AND to combine search terms. Clicking on a category on the left side of the page, for example "Working Papers", brings up those resources. When you do that, you will notice a Search category link at the top of the list. Clicking on the link provides a basic search page with tips and examples.
The Advanced Search screen allows you to search the full text with an exact phrase, with keywords or phrases, and by fields such as author and contributing institution’s name. Use the drop down menus to limit to specific types, regions or dates.
Use the * symbol to truncate your search terms. Keep in mind that truncation is only supported for single words, not phrases. For example, a search for global* will yield results for "globalization" or "globalizing," but a search for the phrase foreign diplom* will not be expanded. Phrases can be enclosed in quotation marks.
