Controlled Digital Lending FAQs

What is Controlled Digital Lending?

Controlled Digital Lending is a way that the library can put a print item on electronic reserve for your class.

What are the conditions for a book to be scanned for Controlled Digital Lending?

In order for a book to qualify for controlled digital lending, the following criteria must be met:

  1. The book must not be available electronically.

  2. Class size.  The class size should be fewer than 50 enrolled students.

  3. Page amount.  Books should be less than 300 pages.

  1. Images.  The book should have less than 15% of the pages with images.

  1. Textbooks.  The book should be supplemental reading and not a textbook.

  1. The book needs to be owned by UCF Libraries.  Use of a faculty copy is strictly prohibited.

  1. The physical copy of the book will not be available while the electronic copy of the book is being used.

  1. Faculty should understand the parameters and promote the use of Leganto and accessing the book electronically.

Does Controlled Digital Lending comply with copyright law?

Most definitely. Students do not have the ability to print, copy, or download from the digital copy. Also, only one student at a time may use the digital copy.

How does Controlled Digital Lending work?

When a student clicks on the View online link for a Controlled Digital Lending item, he or she is taken to the digital copy, provided another student isn’t already viewing the item. If the item is already “checked out,” the student will be put on a waitlist. Each student has one hour to view the material before they are kicked out. At that time, the first student on the waitlist can access the item. That student will be sent an email, notifying them that they have 30 minutes to access the item. At the end of that time, they lose their place in line and the next person on the waitlist is notified. The library will typically set up an 8:00 am-10:00 pm window for use. This is to prevent someone from getting their turn in the middle of the night.

What if I want my students to have different time limits with the material in question?

Contact the library. We can set it up for your class to have longer or shorter accessibility periods. We can also give your students the ability to access the item throughout the night.

Is there a way for a student to know how much time they have remaining before they will lose access?

Yes. In the upper right part of the page is an hourglass icon. Clicking that will let the student know how much time is left.
