Ethnic Newswatch

General Information:

Ethnic Newswatch is an interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. Designed to provide the “other side of the story,” ENW titles were selected to offer additional viewpoints from those proffered by the mainstream press. UCF subscribes to the ProQuest version of the database and coverage begins in 1990.

Search Tips:

    Basic Search – this is the default screen
  • Type in your topic
  • Select a date range
  • Click from the drop-down menu from Ethnic group to select a particular ethnic group to search in
  • May limit your search to full text, scholarly journals (including peer-reviewed” and Biographical (personal profiles)
    Advanced Search – click the Advanced Search tab to use more search criteria
  • Type in your topic in the Search Terms box, using AND, OR, NOT to combine search terms
  • Select search fields from drop-down menu
  • Select date range from drop-down menu
  • Click on Add a row or Remove a row to add or remove more search terms
  • Searching tips
    • Use “quotation marks” to search for exact phrases Truncation – use * to replace one or more letters at the end of a word. For example, econom* finds economy, economics, economical, etc.
    Topics Search – click the Topics tab to search for a Topic with suggested topics
  • Enter a term and select Suggest Topics, then click Find Term
  • Once you have found a term, click View documents to run a search using the term. Or click Narrow to narrow your search using related terms
    Publications Search – click the Publications tab to search for a particular publication
  • Use “quotation marks” to search for an exact title match.
  • If you don’t know the complete title of the publication you’re looking for, type the portion you know in the search field. A list of matches for your partial title appears.
  • Once you have found the publication of your interest, click on it and you can either search for articles within this publication or browse specific issues.
